Air-quality monitoring station installed near the PPK Velebit waste site in Gospić

A monitoring station has been installed at the PPK Velebit illegal waste site in Gospić to track PM2.5, PM10 and metal concentrations in the air during the site's remediation, according to Lika-Senj County. The station was set up at the City of Gospić's request by experts from the Split-Dalmatia County Institute of Public Health, with the county and the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund also involved.

Croatia plans to build four waste-to-energy plants

According to the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund, Croatia plans to build four waste-to-energy plants near Šibenik, in Osijek, Rijeka and Zagreb, at various stages of preparation, with experts noting that construction can take eight to ten years from decision to operation.

Residents protest in Našice against burning of waste from Gospić at the Nexe cement plant

Residents of Našice held another protest against the energy recovery of waste from Gospić at the Nexe cement plant, gathering around a hundred people according to media estimates. City authorities say four trucks of waste have arrived at the plant so far, while Nexe stated the material is non-hazardous shredded plastic and that air quality measurements remained within prescribed limits.

Bacteria unsuitable for drinking found in a Medvednica spring at Talani

An analysis by the Andrija Štampar public health institute dated 18 August found coliform bacteria and intestinal enterococci in a water sample from a natural spring at Talani in the Mikulići area on Medvednica's western slopes, a spring outside the public water system; Medvednica Nature Park has announced it will post a warning that the water is not for drinking.

Institute of Public Health of Republika Srpska publishes data on mental disorders for last year

The Institute of Public Health of Republika Srpska reported, marking World Mental Health Day, that mental health centres recorded 78,106 doctor visits last year, with neurotic and stress-related disorders most common among adults, and 47,118 adults treated in total, including 4,715 hospitalisations.

USKOK widens investigation into illegal waste dumping, suspects released without detention

USKOK said its investigation into illegal waste dumping in Gospić, Benkovac and Senj now covers 14 people and four companies over suspected dumping of thousands of tonnes of hazardous waste and document forgery, but no pretrial detention was sought as prosecutors said there were no grounds. BUZ party leader Milivoj Špika criticised the state prosecution and anti-corruption office, comparing them to a "catch, record and release" fishing club.
